Esprit targets Chinese ATM market - Esprit Financial Group has signed a deal with Hong Kong-based Money Check International Ltd. to deploy ATMs in China on a Joint Venture basis. The parties expect to develop a joint venture to deploy ATMs in mainland China. Current estimates suggest China has roughly 10,000 ATMs, and industry forecasts suggest that number will grow to 1 million over the next five to seven years. Read more
Japanese company uses biometrics in lieu of cards - Taking the idea of a cashless society to a new level, Japan’s JCB Co. Ltd. has announced plans with Hitachi Ltd. to release technology that lets customers pay by scanning their fingers rather than using cards. The system uses biometric technology to identify the veins on a person's finger, which can then serve as a credit card or ATM card. Hitachi plans to launch an experiment in September involving 200 of its employees to see if the technology is commercially viable. Read more
