Cash a Vital Payment Choice in the Digital Economy

The Service Advantage team at Ricoh USA explored current currency management trends and future predictions amongst three groups: consumers, retailers, and manufacturers.
The most common reasons consumers pay cash are inexpensive purchase amounts of less than $60, or if they feel there is a security concern regarding the type of non-cash payment method offered. Many practical consumers also say paying with cash helps them stick to their budget. Retailers surveyed reported that 26% to 50% of in-store transactions are made with cash and confirm that most cash payments fall within the $1 to $50 range.
The global Covid-19 pandemic heightened the focus on and advancement of non-cash payment methods. Still, cash remains vital for many transactions. The bottom line: Including cash in the digital economy will continue to enable all consumers to exercise payment choices.

The ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) announced the release of a new membership level designed specifically for small- and mid-size financial institutions. It includes a package of benefits of particular value to FIs with less than $100 billion in assets. More than 50 of the world’s largest banks, and 9 out of the top 10 in the U.S., are already active members of ATMIA, a financial industry trade association that provides its members with ATM industry best practices, education, advocacy, and networking opportunities.
An ATMIA Financial Institution level membership will provide benefits that your ATM team uses every day. Plug into the Consortium for Next Gen ATMs, an initiative that will lower the cost of operating ATMs while adding functionality. A subscription to a newly launched ATM crime database, through the ATM Security Association, is also included. Train new staff on ATM operational procedures using the ATMIA Academy – two courses annually are included with your membership.

Cash Stories is a portfolio of photos and stories, submitted by ATM deployers and vendors from around the world, underscoring how cash and ATM services positively affected consumers during the pandemic, in emergencies and during the course of normal day to day life. It also includes efforts by the industry to correct the misconception that cash was not safe to use during the pandemic.
